My grandfather Bholanath Mukherjee lived his entire life in Chandernagore along with my grandmother Nilima. After my uncle Atanu, moved from the traditional house (Mukherjee House, Boro Champa Tola) to his new house (near to Kundughat), my grandparents also moved in with them.
My grandfather Bholanath was an employee of Calcutta Municipal Corporation and worked there throughout his career. He was held in his very high esteem by his colleagues and bosses because of his honesty, integrity and hard-work. His knowledge and mastery of both English and French was unparalled. He was a very simple man whose basic philosophy was "Simple Living and High Thinking" and he practised that throughout his life. My grandmother Nilima was a very nice person - the epitome of goodness - people like her do not exist anymore. She was quiet, softspoken, gentle and never raised her voice while talking to anybody. Her entire life was spent in caring and looking after her family and she was affectionately known as "Bhalo Ma" (literally meaning Good Mother) by everyone - family as well as neighborhood.
